DOD CDAO Needs Industry’s Help on 3 New Responsible AI Projects

The Department of Defense’s artificial intelligence office has put out a call for three new opportunities for industry collaboration. The requests for proposals were posted to Tradewinds earlier this month and all center upon responsible AI usage, said Dr. Matthew Johnson, senior technical advisor at the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office.

Dr. Johnson will also be a panelist at Potomac Officers Club’s upcoming 5th Annual AI Summit. The event is three weeks from today — March 21! Register here.

General Dynamics Land Systems Receives $210M Army Contract for Stryker Parts, Services

The military vehicle manufacturing business of General Dynamics has been awarded by the U.S. Army a contract to support Stryker brigade combat teams. Under the $210.3 million deal, General Dynamics Land Systems will provide parts for SBCTs, along with shipment, warehousing, configuration management, repair, obsolescence management and disposal services, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

HII Kicks Off Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System Testing on Navy’s 2nd Ford-Class Aircraft Carrier

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division started topside testing of the electromagnetic aircraft launch system on the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. EMALS is designed to replace the steam catapults on the U.S. Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, can operate at a speed of more than 150 miles per hour and works to provide expanded operational capability, more accurate end-speed control and higher launch-energy capacity, HII said Wednesday.

The Defense Innovation Unit has issued a commercial solutions opening to address a requirement for ruggedized network node hardware. DIU said that the FrontierNode CSO calls for equipment that would accommodate the deployment of government software, support administrative tools for hardware troubleshooting and enable communication up to the Top Secret level.

American Systems Receives Task Order Modification Under $496M WHS Contract

Washington Headquarter Services has awarded American Systems a modification to a task order issued under a potential five-year, $496M contract meant to provide the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering with mission support. The modification, worth $31.8 million, exercises an option under the task whose maximum value, if all options are exercised, reaches $54 million, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Though venture capitalists have invested heavily into defense startups and these companies have expressed interest in pursuing more government contracts, these companies have not yet captured the attention of the Department of Defense. Defense spending trends continue to reflect a strong preference for more established contractors as in fiscal year 2023, startups only accounted for 1 percent of the $411 billion in contracts issued by the DOD.
