BAE Systems has secured a six-year, $48.8 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to enhance a company-built system used to support real-world operations via analytics, open systems frameworks and enhanced capabilities. The U.S. Air Force awarded Applied Research Solutions a $48.75 million contract to study and develop closed-loop sensing, reasoning and data processing technologies for military missions. The cost-plus-fixed-fee contract will cover multiple defense domains and is scheduled for completion by April 2, 2029.

The U.S. Air Force used predictive maintenance applications enabled by artificial intelligence and data analytics to lower maintenance costs and ensure mission readiness, wrote Liz Martin, Department of Defense director at Amazon Web Services. The Department of the Air Force has sent Congress a letter certifying that the communication service to be provided by the upcoming Wideband Global Satcom 12 satellite cannot be achieved by commercial alternatives, according to a statement by the Space Systems Command. The issuance of the letter is in compliance with a requirement within the House of Representatives' version of the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, which threatens to block the acquisition of WGS-12 should the DAF fail to certify the insufficiency of commercial services.
