Special Aerospace Services has appointed Dan Dumbacher, former American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics CEO, as its chief innovation and strategy officer.
Dumbacher’s role at SAS includes leading strategic enhancements and innovations on product and service delivery, the Huntsville, Alabama-based company said Wednesday.
In his over 30 years of industry experience, Dumbacher also previously served as NASA’s exploration systems development director, with work on the space launch system and the Orion spacecraft among his contributions.
Dumbacher will continue to engage the NASA Advisory Council as he pursues growth opportunities to help establish SAS’ global leadership in aerospace solutions.
The company’s growth initiatives manifested in June with the start of construction of a 40,000-square-foot multiuse manufacturing facility in Huntsville.
Heather Bulk, SAS CEO, welcomed Dumbacher to the company’s leadership team, citing his “unparalleled experience” with NASA and AIAA. “Dan’s ability to unite diverse teams, foster innovation, and drive successful outcomes will be critical as we continue to expand our efforts in the space and defense industries,” she said.
A 2024 recipient of the Allyship Award by Women in Aerospace, Dumbacher graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and received his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
