Scott Aken, CEO of Axellio, said the new version of the Transport Layer Security protocol, called TLS 1.3, could provide organizations with end-to-end data encryption but comes with network visibility challenges, particularly in zero trust architectures.
“The advent of TLS 1.3 brings to the forefront a need to balance between robust data encryption and the necessity for network visibility in maintaining effective cybersecurity defenses,” Aken wrote in a guest editorial published Friday in American Security Today.
He called on organizations to adopt a multifaceted approach to cybersecurity that incorporates ways for maintaining visibility and highlighting the importance of encryption.
The chief executive cited several platforms that organizations can use to address the network visibility challenge posed by TLS 1.3 implementation, including endpoint detection and response tools, inline devices, network segmentation, fingerprinting tools and out-of-band decryption devices.
Aken said TLS 1.3 underscores the need for organizations to continuously adapt in a changing digital security landscape and address visibility and end-to-end encryption as combined challenges.
“Both visibility and encryption are critical pillars in our quest for robust security,” he noted.
“As encryption technology continues to evolve, our strategies for maintaining visibility and control over our digital realms must keep pace,” Aken noted.
