Alion Science-Led Team Bids on Canadian Frigate Construction Program

A team led by Alion Science and Technology has submitted a proposal to build a naval platform to replace Canada’s Iroquois-class destroyers and Halifax-class frigates.

Alion said Friday its proposed ship for the Canadian Surface Combatant program is based on Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding‘s De Zeven Provincien-class frigate and features Atlas Elektronik‘s combat management system and Hensoldt‘s radar technology.

Bruce Samuelsen, Alion chief operating officer, said the team offered a NATO-tested vessel in a push to reduce development and design activities and overall cost.

Canada intends to buy 15 CSC ships and expects the construction of the first vessel to commence in the early 2020s.

Alion Science noted it will enlist “dozens” of Canadian suppliers and create high-technology jobs in the country if the company wins the shipbuilding contract.

Potential suppliers include the Canadian subsidiaries of L3 Technologies, Raytheon, Leonardo DRS and Rheinmetall.
