Northrop Grumman has awarded scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Albemarle County, Virginia, as part of its 10th annual STEM scholars event in an effort to encourage students to pursue careers in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The company doled out scholarships through its Engineering Scholars and High School Involvement Partnership initiatives that were launched in the county in 2007, Northrop said Wednesday.
The Engineering Scholars program is a merit-based initiative that aims to acknowledge graduating seniors for their achievements, while the HIP program seeks to provide high school junior and senior students hands-on job training.
Jeff Holloway, executive sponsor for Northrop’s local HIP program and director for the company’s Charlottesville, Virginia-based site, said the HIP program seeks to provide high school students in Albemarle County an opportunity to collaborate with Northrop’s employee mentors.
“By the time they begin college, these students already have a solid understanding of engineering applications, as well as hands-on experience after completing technology-related projects throughout the school year,†Holloway added.
Northrop has committed over $780,000 in scholarship funds for the two programs and mentored 28 students in the county through the HIP initiative.
