Cubic‘s transportation systems business and the University of Melbourne in Australia have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop a national connected multimodal transport test bed.
The NCMT platform will use the company’s surface transport management system and support large-scale tests of emerging technology in complex urban environments, Cubic said Thursday.
Cubic and the University of Melbourne also seek to explore ways to address challenges posed by population growth and traffic congestion with the test bed.
Tests will focus on multimodal transportation systems composed of connected vehicles, roadways, freight, city logistics, public transportation, smart stations, pedestrians and cyclists, the company added.
“Governments need to make operations more efficient, while allowing customers to easily connect with all the services and infrastructure we have created,†said Tom Walker, senior vice president and managing director of CTS’ Asia-Pacific business.
The company noted that the integration of public, private, freight and active transportation information can help guide strategic decision to manage traffic patterns, address congestion and aid city planning.
