A General Atomics-developed battery technology has received certification from the international certification body Det Norske Veritas Germanischer Lloyd following on-hull demonstration tests on a U.S. Special Operations Command undersea vehicle.
DNV GL certified General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems‘ Lithium-ion Fault Tolerant battery after it completed more than 60 hours of at-sea “underway under battery power” operations, General Atomics said Monday.
Paul Clark, LiFT program senior manager at GA-EMS, said the battery features single-cell fault tolerance, which works to mitigate uncontrolled cascading failure.
Clark added that the battery also addresses the need for equipment survivability and safety of on-board personnel.
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division integrated LiFT into the SOCOM undersea vehicle, General Atomics said.
The LiFT battery is designed for manned and unmanned underwater vehicle use and supports integration with various Defense Department platforms such as ground vehicle and aircraft applications, the company added.
