The U.S. government has approved potential foreign military sale contracts with several allied nations for Raytheon‘s AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar in forward-based mode.
The company said Monday the forward-based configuration puts AN/TPY-2 close to enemy bases to detect ballistic missiles soon after launch and transmit information on the target using a command-and-control battle management network.
Dave Gulla, vice president of global integrated sensors at Raytheon’s integrated defense systems unit, said the forward-based radar works to support defensive systems such as the company’s Patriot.
AN/TPY-2 is an X-band radar that features target acquisition, tracking and discrimination functions and is deployed in terminal mode or forward-based mode.
