Windstream will provide the National Weather Service with Ethernet access, fiber optic circuit installations, technical support and Internet services across regional NWS Weather Forecast Offices under a five-year contract.
The company said Dec. 22 that the work includes the setup of the initial circuit infrastructure and related equipment, as well as circuit monitoring, service restoration and maintenance services.
Mike Magliato, Windstream vice president of government sales and solutions, said the company will work to meet the flexibility and bandwidth needs of NWS and bolster the agency’s weather reporting capabilities.
Windstream indicated that delivering high-speed Internet to NWS would also facilitate streamlined interagency communications and reporting processes across the regional offices.
NWS collects weather, climate and hydrologic data as part of a national information database that other agencies, the private sector and the general public have access to.
