PowerplantGeneral Electric has been chosen to provide power generation equipment to a plant that supplies electricity to households and businesses in the city of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is re-powering the Scattergood generating station in El Segundo, Calif. and picked GE’s combustion turbines and distributed control system to replace legacy systems at the facility, the company said Monday.

Victor Abate, GE president and CEO for the power generation products business, said the goal is to help the utility manage energy grid infrastructures and address renewable energy issues.

GE’s Rapid Response platform is comprised of a 216-megawatt gas turbine, an ST-A650 combined-cycle steam generator and an energy recovery heat exchanger.

LADPW aims for the Scattergood station to cut carbon emissions and ocean water cooling by using the GE technology, the company says.

The plant’s GE-built power generation system is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2015.
