The U.S. Army plans to begin accepting industry proposals on facial recognition technology with potential military and civilian security applications on April 14, according to a Small Business Research Innovation opportunity notice posted on SAM. gov.
The military service said Wednesday it is seeking small businesses that can design and develop a biometric recognition camera system for integration with the Automated Installation Entry platform and deployment at installation access control points.
Security personnel use the AIE system to validate identification credentials of common access card and military ID holders against information stored in authoritative databases.
Under the three-phase effort, participants will aim to build a system that works to recognize passengers inside a vehicle, take a photo of the driver and compare the picture to a gallery of pre-approved user images.
The Army wants the system to help security guards determine whether they should grant or deny visitors access to a facility without interrupting vehicle traffic flow.
Interested parties must submit proposals via the Defense SBIR/STTR Innovation Portal by May 18.
