Raytheon Tests Ship Self-Defense System With Dual Missile Targets

Raytheon, in partnership with the U.S. Navy, has concluded the developmental testing of an integrated combat system designed to protect an aircraft carrier from airborne threats.

It tested USS Gerald R. Ford’s Ship Self-Defense System with an unmanned test vessel off California’s coast, the company the company said Tuesday.

The SSDS ICS features dual-band radar to detect targets and guide the carrier’s Evolved SeaSparrow and Rolling Airframe missiles to engage threats.

Two anti-ship missile targets were identified, traced and countered during the exercise.

“This successful dual-target test demonstrates the maturity of the Ship Self Defense System ICS and paves the way for operational testing to begin,” said Mike Fabel, Raytheon's SSDS program manager.
