The U.S. Army‘s Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center has tapped VICIS to enhance the blunt impact performance of combat helmets, the Seattle, Wash., company announced Tuesday.
VICIS will explore applying its football helmet liner as a replacement for the foam liner pads currently used in Army and Marine Corps helmets.
A 2013 Congressional Research Service report indicated that blunt force impact from training and other non-deployed operations result in 80 percent of traumatic brain injuries in the U.S. military, VICIS noted.
Service veterans who will advise the VICIS Military Coalition on the helmet enhancement project include:
- Peter Chiarelli, retired U.S. Army general
- Kevin Cosgriff, retired U.S. Navy vice admiral
- Charles Wald, retired U.S. Air Force general
