Qualcomm has been authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct unmanned aerial systems test flights at the company’s San Diego facility.
The telecommunications conglomerate said April 7 it plans to test UAS autonomous operations and other tools that include a 4G/5G communication link intended to help protect other aircraft and people on the ground.
Under this FAA certificate of authorization, Qualcomm is allowed to test unmanned aircraft below 200 feet within its San Diego ground campus that is located near an airport with air traffic control tower.
Qualcomm will also focus its research on remote operations and autonomous flight control algorithms that are designed to utilize new control and computer vision engines that work to help an unmanned aircraft navigate, avoid obstacles, determine a landing zone and hover.
