Aerojet Rocketdyne has conducted field tests on a power generation system designed to help U.S. deployed troops to produce electricity out of surplus materials.
The company said Thursday its Rocket Shop defense advanced programs unit developed the Hybrid Renewable Multifuel Power Generator for the U.S. Navy‘s Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center.
HR-MPG works to burn plastic bottles, wood, food waste or cardboards and convert these materials into electricity, Aerojet Rocketdyne noted.
The generator is powered by a Stirling engine and has been integrated into a towable trainer.
The Office of Naval Research funded the HR-MPG development effort.
Aerojet Rocketdyne’s Rocket Shop aims to help defense customers build technology through the use of rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing processes.
