GDIT's Matthew McFadden: PQC Adoption a 'Mission-Critical Imperative' - top government contractors - best government contracting event

For General Dynamics Information Technology‘s Matthew McFadden, transitioning to post-quantum cryptography is not simply a technical upgrade or challenge but is “a mission-critical imperative,” according to an article posted Monday on Government Executive.

The Urgency of PQC Adoption

The need for PQC stems from the potential for quantum computers to eventually overcome current cryptographic encryption standards. And while it remains uncertain when quantum computers will mature to achieve that capability, McFadden believes the time to take action is now.

“The security of our most sensitive systems and data depends on our ability to act decisively today,” GDIT’s vice president for cyber said, adding, “Agencies must embrace this transformation now to stay ahead of quantum risks and ensure the resilience of their operations for years to come.”

Support for Government Transition to PQC

To advance government adoption of PQC, the National Institute of Standards and Technology released in August 2024 PQC algorithms, a development that McFadden described another article as “a critical step forward in preparing for the post-quantum era, providing a roadmap for agencies to begin their transition to quantum-resistant encryption.”

In that same article, the GDIT executive said his company is prepared to support federal agencies as they work to address the challenges posed by transitioning to PQC, saying that, to carry out such efforts, “agencies need a trusted partner to ensure their cryptography strategy is innovative and ready for the post-quantum future.”
