The U.S. Marine Corps looks to issue a contract in March or April next year to equip rifle squads with 84mm shoulder-fired rocket launchers, Marine Corps Times reported Thursday.
The report said Marines seek to acquire more than 1K Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles.
Barbara Hamby, a Marine Corps Systems Command spokeswoman, said the service aims to begin fielding the weapon systems in the second half of fiscal year 2020 or by early FY 2021.
Carl Gustaf manufacturer Saab partnered with Raytheon in October to demonstrate a new laser-guided munition for the rifle technology.
Both companies will also help the U.S. Army conduct firing tests of the munition sometime in 2020.
