Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ Newport News Industrial business has received a Safety and Health Recognition Program certification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The company said Wednesday the SHARP certification recognizes small business employers that have implemented an injury prevention and safety program and utilized OSHA’s on-site consultation services.
“The consultation process allowed us to review and improve our processes and facilities and involved culture changes and adaptation from all employees,” said Steve Napiecek, vice president of NNI.
Huntington Ingalls noted NNI started on-site consultations with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry in 2013 with the goal of receiving the certification.
Findings from the consultations worked to guide the implementation of new procedures for contractor management, crane, rigging and abrasive blasting operations, personal protection and facility safety, the company added.
NNI is part of the nuclear and environmental group within Huntington Ingalls’ technical solutions division.
