DigitalGlobe has shown the first image from the Lockheed Martin-built WorldView-4 satellite that launched in November from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California to join the geospatial content and imagery provider’s satellite constellation.
“Seeing these first images is only a glimpse of the value WorldView-4 will bring to the world,†Carl Marchetto, vice president and general manager of Lockheed’s commercial space business, said in a statement released Monday.Â
Marchetto noted the WorldView 4 satellite will work to provide pictures and information on events worldwide in an effort to help government officials, disaster relief personnel and city planners make decisions.
DigitalGlobe said the image was captured on Nov. 26 and shows the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan, that will host the 2020 Olympic Games.
The satellite with a Harris Corp.-made imaging payload lifted off aboard a United Launch Alliance-made Atlas V rocket and will work to collect 30-centimeter commercial satellite imagery.
