night visionBAE Systems has received a potential $13.5 million task order for low-rate initial production of thermal weapon sight systems for the U.S. Army.

BAE said Tuesday the service branch awarded the production order under a potential five-year, $434 million contract that BAE secured in May 2015 as part of the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle III and Family of Weapon Sight-Individual program.

The production order comes after BAE received Milestone C approval for its FWS-I systems following completion of several field tests.

Marc Casseres, director of imaging and aiming solutions at BAE, said the weapon sights tools work to help soldiers acquire targets and perform surveillance missions in any weather and lighting conditions.

The BAE-built FWS-I is an infrared-based thermal weapon sight tool designed to help soldiers detect targets at a range of more than 1,000 meters and works to facilitate target engagement when integrated with the ENVG III system and Rapid Target Acquisition Module platform.
