BAE Systems has launched a new portable sensor system designed to perform tactical situational awareness functions for soldiers through detection and analysis of radiofrequency signals.
BAE said Tuesday it developed the electronic warfare platform under a contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in support of DARPA’s Cognitive radio Low-energy signal Analysis Sensor ICs program and Computational Leverage Against Surveillance Systems initiative.
“Better situational awareness on the battlefield means superior protection for our troops and a greater ability to defeat hostile threats,†said Joshua Niedzwiecki, director of sensor processing and exploitation at BAE.
The handheld EW tool works to help warfighters detect and classify enemy communication signals, jammers and other RF signals through the use of cognitive processing algorithms.
Field test results show that the EW platform worked to detect at least 10 types of signals across a wide spectrum amid the presence of interfering signals.
BAE said it plans to continue development work on the new platform for potential integration with its portfolio of signals intelligence, tactical communications and EW systems.
