Gulfstream Aerospace, a General Dynamics subsidiary, has utilized 3-D software technology in the design of paint schemes in efforts to build on aircraft design flexibility and quality.
General Dynamics said Thursday Gulfstream engineers at the company’s Savannah Completions Center supported the development of the software, which projects a multidimensional paint scheme onto the aircraft to provide an alternative to flat design schematics.
“With this software, designers can make design changes in real time with the touch of a button,” said Scott Neal, Gulfstream senior vice president for worldwide sales and marketing.
Neal added designers can forego the flat drawing process and see the paint scheme applied to the curves of an aircraft using the 3-D rendering.
The company noted the program was based on Delta Sigma‘s ProjectionWorks commercial 3-D software program originally used for aircraft manufacturing to pinpoint locations for rivets and other fasteners.
