Michael Shrader, vice president of innovative and intelligence solutions at Carahsoft, believes technical challenges that healthcare providers face present an opportunity for information technology vendors, he wrote in a blog article published Wednesday.
He has noted some vendors that have built information technology products in efforts to help government agencies manage a healthcare insurance program and a pandemic.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services collaborated with MarkLogic to design, build and implement an enterprise platform for U.S. residents to enroll in healthcare plans electronically, according to Shrader.
MarkLogic’s network and virtualized servers for CMS’ healthcare insurance enrollment program  has helped the agency save up to $7.5 million, he added.
He also cited Emergency Visions‘ introduction of a cloud-based and mobile-ready disaster resource management tool amid the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in a move to help responders monitor spread of the disease globally and coordinate delivery of care.
“With technological improvements and better implementation and use of health IT to respond to crisis or governmental need… challenges can become simplified and even overcome,” Shrader stated.
