The National Institute of Standards and Technology has awarded $3.7 million in grants to support the pilot projects of MorphoTrust USA, HealthIDx and Galois under the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace program.
NIST said Monday this fourth round of grants is part of the agency’s larger efforts to ensure the security of online transactions and data privacy.
“We need more — and better — tools to make online identity easier and more secure, and to advance the commercial deployment of privacy-enhancing technologies,” said Mike Garcia, acting director of the NSTIC National Program Office.
MorphoTrust’s $1 million pilot program will focus on tax refund theft prevention, HealthIDx’s $813,922 grant is for a “triple blind” privacy-enhancing technology for medical information and the $1.9 million Galois initiative targets personal data storage with biometrics-based authentication.
“These pilots will provide innovative, practical solutions to ensure the trust we need to combat the growing threat of cyber threats and keep our online economy growing,” said Bruce Andrews, deputy secretary at the Commerce Department.
