Boeing has kicked off the development of a computer chip meant for the company’s Black smartphone with a $2.2 million award from the Department of Homeland Security, Nextgov reported Tuesday.
Aliya Sternstein writes the chip will be designed to work on any mobile device and identify a user’s characteristic gestures such as the walking style to check for anomalous behavior.
Boeing and HRL Laboratories, a joint venture of Boeing and General Motors, will develop the project for two and a half years, according to the report.
Vincent Sritapan, program manager for DHS’ mobile device security program, told Nextgov the companies will make use of behavior data gathered via consumer mobile devices.
Sritapan said the goal is to verify whether to grant user access to enterprise resources, Nextgov reports.
Sritapan added DHS and Boeing plan to begin a six-month pilot program under shared funds once the research and development period for the chip ends, Sternstein reports.
