Hughes Network Systems‘ defense and intelligence systems division has worked with partners Boeing, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman and DataPath to test the video transmission capability of its satellite communications system for airborne platforms.
Hughes said Monday the test demonstrated the real-time transmission of high-definition video from a NorthStar Aviation Bell 407MRH helicopter via Inmarsat‘s Global Xpress I-5 F2 satellite.
“High-definition video with zero packet loss through rotary blades is a significant new capability for satellite communications,” said Rick Lober, vice president and general manager of Hughes DISD.
“This technology opens the door for pervasive use of SATCOM-enabled helicopters over mountainous terrain, open water, natural disasters or anywhere that line-of-sight communication means are blocked or out of range.”
Hughes noted that applications for its waveform technology that supports video transmission from rotary-wing aircraft to ground operatives include border security, ISR, search and rescue, news gathering, wildfire response and police patrol.
The company added that its technology can transmit from both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft via any satellite frequency bands.
