The U.S. Energy Department is seeking public comments on a plan to build a national reserve of large transformers intended to support the U.S.’ bulk power system.
In a request for information published Thursday in the Federal Register, the department said it aims to develop strategies to avoid large-scale electric service interruptions due to a lack of spare power transformers.
DOE noted the country’s BPS infrastructure faces potential environmental, cyber and physical security and electromagnetic threats.
The agency wants to know about methods to manufacture, store and transport replacement transformers that operators can use in case of power emergencies.
Responses to the RFI are due Aug. 24.
