Deltek‘s John Slye has urged the Office of Personnel Management to work on the consistency of its information technology budget reporting as it moves to modernize its cybersecurity measures in the aftermath of data breaches at the agency.
Slye, an advisory research analyst at Deltek, wrote in a blog entry posted Thursday that OPM seeks an additional $21 million for its fiscal 2016 IT modernization budget compared to its $87 million budget in fiscal 2015.
He noted that there is a “disconnect” in OPM’s IT Portfolio and IT Business Cases documents submitted to the Office of Management and Budget in terms of the funding or investment lines and amounts indicated.
According to Slye, the agency’s IT Portfolio puts in a total budget request of $127.5 million for fiscal 2016, while its IT Business Cases indicates a request of $288.2 million.
“We are unlikely to have much in the way of timely visibility into OPM’s spending to improve their systems and related cybersecurity except what they are willing to communicate on their website or through the media,” he said.
“[Maybe] one outcome will be improved IT budget reporting and internal consistency.”
