Richard Breakiron,ViON‘s senior director of cyber solutions, has recommended steps he believes can help secure the Internet of Things from what he calls potential vulnerabilities in devices.
Breakiron wrote in a GCN op-ed published Thursday that potential flaws in IoT devices during the design and development phase could lead to national security risks.
He recommends downloads of updates to devices over the Web in a secured connectivity and usage of two-factor authentication on devices.
Breakiron also suggests security for the virtual and physical location of data, encryption for critical infrastructure and two-person controls in order to help avoid insider threats.
He also advises enterprises to put security in the supply chain and to use band systems that are closed from the public.
Breakiron calls on users to support standardization projects and keep tabs on information from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Federal Information Processing Standards.
