The Defense Department is exploring two options to integrate commercial cloud services into the agency’s data centers, Information Week reported Friday.
Jai Vijayan writes the Defense Information Systems Agency has released a request for information in search of ideas from industry on ways to have cloud vendors deliver services to the U.S. military using DoD’s network and facilities.
Under a potential data center leasing model, cloud companies could lease rack or floor space within the department’s data centers and deliver cloud services from inside the DoD facility, according to the report.
The department also will examine the on-premise container model, through which cloud vendors would be able to provide services to the military via containerized data centers, the magazine reports.
Cloud companies would operate from prefabricated containers equipped with heating, cooling, redundant power supplies and network connectivity near a DoD data center under the on-premise container model, Vijayan reports.
Information Week reports potential cloud vendors would also support the military’s most sensitive data by using these cloud delivery models.
