cyberMITRE will team up with the University System of Maryland to operate a federally-funded research-and-development center in Rockville, Maryland that will carry out R&D, engineering and technical services in the cybersecurity field.

UMD campuses in College Park and Baltimore County will help MITRE work with the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence in an effort to help promote public-private partnerships, MITRE said Friday.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology tasked MITRE to manage the FFRDC, which will aim to support NCCoE’s mission to secure national information systems from cyber threats.

Alfred Grasso, MITRE president and CEO, said the nonprofit organization will work with the cybersecurity community on standards development and threat-sharing programs to complement the new project.

USM Chancellor William Kirwan also said there is opportunity for collaboration between the university’s students, faculty and staff; MITRE; and the larger business community.

NCCoE is a partnership between NIST, the state of Maryland and Montgomery County that aims to protect companies’ data and digital infrastructure from cyberattacks.
