A group of students and researchers at a Polish university has built an autonomous control system for unmanned aerial vehicles through a Lockheed Martin-backed project.
Lockheed said Friday that Warsaw University of Technology’s research team demonstrated the autonomous drone software under a partnership agreement between the company and the university.
The alliance’s goal is to develop new platforms that can help improve a UAV’s system performance and ability to perform missions with manned aircraft.
Janusz Narkiewicz, a Warsaw University of Technology professor and project leader, said the control software will be embedded in multiple drones for the program’s test flight phase.
Lockheed aims to expand its presence in Poland by partnering with defense, security, academic and research organizations.
