iridium logoIridium Communications has moved to extend the coverage of its broadband platform by launching a new communications offering for customers to access the Internet and obtain voice-calling services from different locations.

The Iridium Pilot Land Station is based on the OpenPort broadband technology and is designed to work in rough conditions through Iridium’s constellation of 66 connected low-Earth orbit satellites, Iridium said Tuesday.

Bryan Hartin, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Iridium, said the company intends for the Iridium Pilot Land Station to deliver communications services for individual and business clients worldwide.

The system is designed for governments and emergency response customers to recover voice and Internet connections and also for humanitarian aid groups to communicate with each other.

Pilot Land Station is also intended to help explorers and researchers collaborate.
