Personal and ubiquitous computing tools are giving rise to a new generation of platforms intended to drive greater integration within an organization, according to Andras Szakal, vice president and chief technology officer of IBM’s federal division.
Szakal wrote in a blog post published Friday the Third Platform can be defined as the convergence of mobile, big data, cloud and “Internet of Things” technologies into enterprise infrastructure.
“These technologies are dramatically changing how enterprise systems are architected, how customers interact with business, and the rate and pace of development and deployment across the enterprise,” he stated.
He observed that government and commercial organizations respond to this trend by updating their system architectures to help them manage integrated data from multiple platforms.
According to Szakal, the Third Platform comprises three segments, namely systems of record, systems of engagement and systems of sensors.
“These new architectures and the underlying technologies will require adjustments to how organizations approach enterprise IT governance, to lower the barrier of entry necessary to implement and integrate the technologies,” he added.
He says the Open Group established a new forum for organizations to collaborate on developing standards and guidelines for emerging Third Platform offerings.
The Open Platform 3.0 Forum is also designed to help enterprises address challenges associated with technology adoption and integration.
