Viasat has introduced its first wearable tactical communications tool designed for dismounted troops’ rapid setup to quickly establish situational awareness.
Secure Wireless Hub’s development was part of a U.S. Special Operations Command multi-phase program to provide mobile ground forces with advanced tactical communications capabilities, the Carlsbad, California-based communications technology company said.
The system, although significantly lesser in size, weight and power, works to offer the interoperability level of larger transit communication tools.
Viasat’s NetAgility, a mobile, software-defined networking platform with a secure VPN, brings the edge compute capability to SWH for safe access to advanced networks.
David Schmolke, vice president of mission connections and cybersecurity at Viasat Government, noted the tactical edge operators’ current demand for platforms advancing battle management command, control and communications capabilities.
“The Secure Wireless Hub is our latest tactical solution created to support this by addressing interoperability, automation and security challenges for the dismounted user,” he said.
In August 2022, Viasat won a $99 million contract from the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command for the supply of radio system terminals that link military platforms in various environments.
The company had also previously delivered 200 of its advanced Move Out/Jump Off Link 16 expeditionary tactical gateway communications system to various military users.
