The Department of Defense is targeting artificial intelligence applications for use in critical cybersecurity defense measures, organizational efficiency strategies and broader modernization initiatives.
Recently, the Defense Department launched its new Chief Digital Artificial Intelligence Office – led by John Sherman, DOD’s chief information officer and 2022 Wash100 Award recipient – with the intention of fostering a “digital and artificial intelligence-enabled enterprise” that can keep pace with rapid technological advancements and ensure the country’s military advantage.

During a recent Pentagon media roundtable, a senior DOD official said the establishment of the new CDAO marks a “key milestone” in the Department of Defense’s overarching digital transformation goals.
The Defense Information Systems Agency is also looking at how artificial intelligence and machine learning can fit into its adoption and deployment of robotic process automation.
DISA aims to implement RPA at an enterprise-wide level to benefit from the technology’s time and cost savings across back-office processes, and AI/ML may be able to help enhance the efficiency of RPA.
“In the industry, RPA is generally regarded as a sort of stepping stone to AI,” said Stephen Wallce, chief technology officer for DISA and director of the agency’s Emerging Technology Directorate.
“You can actually start to have the bot make decisions a bit more intelligently based on the feedback that it is getting from the application that it is interacting with,” Wallace added.
Wallace shared that while DISA is not quite at that point yet with the deployment of the technology, the Emerging Technology Directorate expects to see more progress surrounding AI and RPA over the next year.
