The Department of Homeland Security has reached a new milestone in its Small Business Innovation Research Program, having awarded its 1000th contract under the effort.

It awarded more than 1000 SBIR contracts over the past 15 years and 34 solicitations, DHS said Thursday. In June, 22 new contracts were added, bringing the total DHS SBIR award count to 1,018. The new awards will support six-month initial phase projects that will cover feasibility research.

William Bryan, DHS’ acting undersecretary for science and technology, said the program helped the department and small businesses create technologies that support first responder efforts, technology protection and more.

The SBIR program provides small businesses with opportunities to address the country’s homeland security requirements.
