Booz Allen’s Graham Gilmer: DoD Should Address Three Components to Accelerate AI Adoption

Graham Gilmer, a principal at Booz Allen Hamilton, wrote in an opinion piece published Monday on C4ISRNET that the Department of Defense and the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center have three components to consider to advance AI adoption and one is to build trust in AI platforms.

“The confusion surrounding AI has led to teams abandoning applications due to a lack of trust. To build that trust, we must prioritize training, explainability, and transparency,” Gilmer wrote.

Another factor DoD and JAIC should consider is operationalizing AI at the enterprise level, which involves the development of scalable infrastructure, a library of reusable frameworks and tools, data stores and standards and security measures to safeguard against adversarial AI.

Gilmer called on the Pentagon to establish governance standards and ethical guidelines to reduce risk. This can be done by creating “proactive risk management procedures and processes for continuous testing and validation for compliance purposes.”

He added that focusing on the three components could help the U.S. maintain its competitive advantage in AI, safeguard national security and lead on the global stage.
