Saab has secured a new order to supply additional radar systems for the U.S. Navy’s two Independence-class littoral combat ships.
The company said Monday General Dynamics placed the order for the AN/SPS-77 variant of Sea Giraffe AMB naval radar for installation aboard the Navy’s LCS 36 and LCS 38 ships.
Erik Smith, president and CEO of Saab’s U.S. defense and security business, said Sea Giraffe is designed to meet the specific mission requirements of U.S. maritime services.
Saab, which received the first order for the radar system in 2005, will perform work in Syracuse, N.Y., and Gothenburg, Sweden.
Saab is developing the AN/SPN-50 radar for CVN-class aircraft carriers and LHA/LHD landing dock ships to meet the Naval Air Systems Command’s air traffic control requirements and plans to deploy other Sea Giraffe variants for the service’s Expeditionary Sea Base ships and the Coast Guard's Offshore Patrol Cutter ships.Â
