Axon has appointed Mecole Jordan, Christy Lopez and Kathleen O’Toole to serve on a company-formed ethics board.

The AI and Policing Technology Ethics Board meets twice a year to tackle ethical matters related to AI-based public safety technology platforms being developed by the company, Axon said Tuesday.

Jordan serves as executive director of the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations. Lopez is currently a distinguished visitor from practice at the Georgetown University Law Center while O’Toole previously served as police chief in Seatle, Wash., and police commissioner in Boston, Mass.

In 2018, the board recommended that Axon launch an bias awareness training for its AI research team developers similar to those conducted by police departments nationwide.

Axon presented its implicit bias awareness training concept to major U.S. police agencies and will conduct a training session, themed "Fair & Impartial Policing: A Science-Based Perspective."
