The Department of Defense intends to develop new communications platforms as part of an initiative to optimize and streamline the military’s infrastructure, National Defense reported Friday.
DoD plans to leverage cloud computing and satellite communications to support the use of next-generation technologies for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.
John Morris, chief engineer at the Space and Missile System Center’s military satellite communications directorate, said the military needs to reinforce network and warfighter capabilities to address modernization concerns.
SMC plans to pursue international and commercial partnerships and develop prototypes for ground systems, payloads and satellite units.
The Pentagon also seeks to tap low-Earth orbit satellites and other commercial technologies to meet bandwidth and stringent space requirements.
