Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division has installed a new radar structure on a nuclear-powered U.S. Navy aircraft carrier as part of a $2.8B refueling and complex overhaul project.
Installation of the radar tower indicated that RCOH work on the service branch’s Nimitz-class USS George Washington is 25 percent complete, HII said Friday.
The Navy selected Newport News Shipbuilding last year to refuel refuel CVN 73 reactors and refurbish over 2.3K compartments, 600 tanks and various other systems on board the ship.
The project is scheduled for completion in late 2021.
CVN 73 is the sixth carrier of its class to undergo the life cycle process and the first to receive an integrated radar platform instead of two separate units.
