Northrop Grumman has received Aviation Week magazine’s Program Excellence award for the company’s program goal achievement and leadership role in the development of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.
Scott Willoughby, vice president and James Webb Space Telescope program manager at Northrop, was selected in the subsystem research and design category for delivering the telescope and Integrated Science Instrument Module subsystem components, Northrop said Wednesday.
“Aviation Week’s recognition of our Northrop Grumman team for our work on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is quite an honor,†said Willoughby.
Northrop designed the Webb’s optics, sunshield and spacecraft for the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Scott Texter, telescope manager at Northrop, leads the development of the telescope subsystem, one of the four main elements of the Webb Observatory along with the spacecraft, sunshield and the ISIM.
The James Webb Space Telescope will replace the Hubble Space Telescope and is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
Aviation Week also named other Northrop programs as finalists to the award such as the Hunter Unmanned Aircraft System Program, the Data Repositories Program and the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk.
