Lockheed Martin and Spain-based shipbuilding company Navantia have agreed to extend their partnership and jointly explore potential business opportunities in the surface ship and naval combat technology markets.
The alliance commemorates the 20th anniversary of a collaborative effort to integrate the Aegis Combat System onto the Spanish navy’s F-100 frigates, Lockheed said Thursday.
F-100 is the first frigate to employ the weapon system that Lockheed designed to support anti-air warfare missions and provide full expeditionary coverage for naval ships.
The partnership provided four F-100 frigates to the Spanish Navy between 2000 and 2010, followed by a fifth one in 2013.
Lockheed and Navantia built 11 frigates that currently support naval missions worldwide.
Both companies aim to build F-110 next-generation frigates for the Spanish navy as well as collaborate to identify commercial market opportunities globally through the extended partnership agreement.
