Paul Smith, senior vice president and general manager of Red Hat‘s U.S. public sector business, has identified the use of open source in development models as a “de facto setting” for digital transformation initiatives at agencies.
Smith said Nov. 2 at the 2016 Red Hat Government Symposium in Arlington, Virginia that the government’s open-first strategy toward digital transformation “is absolute foundation for choice and security.”
Red Hat announced in October that the symposium seeks engage approximately 650 government and industry professionals to underscore the role of open source technology in digital transformation projects.
“Digital transformation is an unstoppable force as constituents and consumers are demanding more value and a greater user experience,” Smith said.
“I don’t have to go on stage anymore and tout the benefits of open source as a development model, it’s a given,” he added.
Smith noted an open-first strategy provides the “power to choose without compromising security.”
He also said hybrid cloud gives users the option to move workloads from on premise to the cloud and vice versa.
Smith added the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program is an example of the government’s leadership in terms of security models.
He said all three vendors that have achieved FedRAMP’s highest level of authorization deploy Red Hat offerings in their cloud platforms.
