ExecutiveBiz: What technological advancement do you feel will most significantly impact your business in 2016?
Jeff Yu: The Internet of Things (IoT) is moving rapidly from simple implementations, such as a networked sensor (e.g., a thermometer) or actuator (e.g., a light switch), to truly useful systems. In a system, a networked thermostat may be the first building block in creating a smart home or building. IoT is also gaining ground in the industrial setting, where for example, a jet engine with hundreds of networked sensors may be not only part of a system (an airplane), but part of an entire ecosystem. This ecosystem stretches from the automated factory where the engine is made to the operations center where the airline that owns the airplane mines the data from the many individual sensors, and then models behavior, optimizes operations, and forecasts maintenance for an entire fleet. Big Data analytics from the sensor edge to the operational cloud must meet cognitive systems for IoT to work at scale. When attached to and controlling systems that matter, the data from and actions performed by IoT must be trusted, and the systems must be adaptive and resilient. At its heart, IoT is about collecting, sharing, and acting upon data, and then learning and adapting real-world operations. I expect IoT to be impactful in a seamless, almost invisible way, at an even faster rate than most predict.
