OilPipesThe Energy Department has issued a request for proposals to establish a new public-private partnership institute with $70 million in funding to develop technologies meant to save energy for manufacturing processes used in U.S. industries.

The Modular Chemical Process Intensification Institute will be the fourth DOE-led institute within the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation as part of an effort to increase U.S. energy productivity by 2030, the department said Thursday.

DOE operates the network to facilitate collaboration between small- and medium-sized companies, academic institutions, industrial research organizations and national laboratories.

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said the new institute will aim to help develop new “chemical manufacturing processes that can make our industries more energy efficient, protect our air and water and help reduce the impacts of climate change.”

The new institute will use modular chemical process intensification approaches to combine the mixing, reaction and separation processes.

Submissions for the request are due to DOE by June 15.
