BAE Systems has released a study that profiles six types of cyber criminals in an effort to help businesses understand the motivations of network threat actors and develop defense strategies against them.
BAE released the Unusual Suspects research, which is based on an analysis of cyber attacks launched against companies worldwide, to coincide with the opening of the company’s new office in Singapore, BAE said Thursday.
“We developed the Unusual Suspects as an educational tool for organizations to gain a better understanding of the criminals they are up against online,†said Boye Vannell, general manager for Asia at BAE’s applied intelligence business.
BAE described “The Mule†as a naive individual who carries out money laundering activities for criminal gangs and “The Nation State Actor†as the one that commits data theft in support of their governments.
Other types of cyber criminals profiled by BAE in the study include “The Activist,” “The Getaway,” “The Professional” and “The Insider.”
BAE will house cybersecurity and technical professionals at its Singapore office.
