Amazon Web Services has introduced new tools designed to help users analyze and integrate Next Generation Weather Radar data with workflows on AWS’ Simple Storage Service cloud platform.
NEXRAD is a system composed of 160 Doppler radar sites that work to collect data that commercial firms and researchers use to predict severe storms, AWS said in a blog post published Jan. 6.
The WeatherPipe tool is a Java-based open-source platform that works to help users use the Amazon Elastic MapReduce Web service to analyze NEXRAD archived data hosted on Amazon S3.
Stephen Harrell, an employee at Purdue University’s research computing office and a computer science student, developed the prototype for the WeatherPipe tool with his classmates Hanqi Du, Lala Vaishno De and Xiaoyang Li.
AWS also launched a notification tool for both archived and real-time NEXRAD data in an effort to help users perform event-based data processing.
The company used its Amazon Simple Notification Service to create public topics for both types of data in order to develop notifications for every new file on Amazon S3.
